The Arizona Miner
Prescott, Arizona Territory
August 24th, 1867
MILITARY MATTERS.
Major Clendenin and the recruits for Camp Mohave and Fort Whipple
have reached Mohave. Bvt. Lieut. Col. Price has taken the field
for an extended scout. His head quarters are at the Willows, on
the Mohave road. An infantry camp will be established at the
Willows, and Co's. K and L 8th cavalry, and some recruits for 1st
cavalry, will do the scouting.
The company of 9th infantry lately at El Dorado Caöon and
Callville, has been moved to Mohave excepting a small guard, left
at each of these places.
The company of the 8th cavalry, under Lieut. Purdy, at Toll Gate,
Mohave road, will co—operate with Col. Price, by scouting the
Juniper mountains. Lieut. Purdy was in town on Thursday.
The troops from Camp Lincoln are still scouting on the Agua Frio,
Ash Creek and Big Bug.
The troops at McPherson are nearly all sick.
On the morning after Paymaster Dana left Prescott for Camps
( Friday of last week) information was
McPherson and McDowell ,
communicated to General Gregg, to the effect that the escort, 15
men of Co. 1 8th cavalry, intended to rob the Paymaster upon the
desert below Wickenburg, and proceed to Sonora. Immediately upon
arrival of the Paymaster at McPherson the escort was surrounded
by the troops at that post, disarmed and placed in confinement,
much to the surprise and relief of the Paymaster. A few days
before the Paymaster left here, Tom Hodges and a party of scouts
left here for Wickenburg, and a detachment of cavalry, under
Lieut. Fechet, passed hurriedly through the town on Saturday, to
escort the Paymaster from McPherson to McDowell . The Arizona Miner
