SILAS LONG
Was born at Waynesburg, Greene County, Pennsylvania, in
about 1827 , and was probably a son of Samuel and Susan
Long. On November 1st, 1864 at Nevada City, California he
enlisted to serve three years, as private in Captain George
D. Kendall s Company "I" 7th California Infantry. He was
mustered in at the Presidio of San Francisco, November
18th, 1864. Before enlisting in the service he worked as a
Miner. He left San Francisco with his Company during May of
1865 for Fort Whipple, A. T. , via Fort Mohave, A. T . and
arrived in June, 1865. While serving as a Mail Escort on
detached service, along the Fort Whipple, Date Creek Road,
he was killed by Indians July 21st, 1865, near Skull
Valley, A-T- His remains eventually were relocated to the
Camp Date Creek, A. T. Cemetery. During June of 1892 his
remains were removed to the San Francisco National Cemetery
at the Presidio, and reinterred in Grave Number 1187 , West
Side.
