The Arizona Miner Prescott, Arizona Territory March 26th, 1875 Local Intelligence. INDIAN RUMORS.- Constable Leonard rep orts having seen some half dozen Indians near the Agua Fria last week, which Mr.. Swilling thinks are a few that have been wandering harmlessly about that country for months. A man named Thompson, who has lately arrived from California, told us of seeing one and hearing two others hollow, on the Santa Maria, and near by came upon the remains of an ox or cow that had recently been butchered and eaten by them. On his arrival at Gilson’s place, on Date Creek, Mr. Gilson informed him that there were some ten Indians in that locality where they had been for somet ime and they were not dangerous.

The Arizona Miner Prescott, Arizona Territory March 5th, 1875 Local Intelligence - JAMES ONEAL, who spells his name just as we have rendered it in this paragraph, without any French prefix, suff ix, affix or termination, has been in town from Date Creek. Frank Murray tried to cap a fight between Oneal and ourseif on account of a supposed correspondence endwise— in our longitudinal dimensions; but when James made a survey of his antagonist he gave it up and intimated that if any of his friends wanted to take a chance they could do so. Mr. Oneal has a large band of sheep on Date Creek which he informs us are doing splendidly. He is himself one of the jolliest fellows you would meet in a day’s march.

The Burned Government Warehouse At Camp Date Creek, contained a great deal of stores, all of which, with the exception of some flour, were consumed. The walls of the burned building were of stone; the roof of pine shingles. Have not yet heard how fire was communicated to it.

The Arizona Miner Prescott, Arizona Territory November 18th, 1871 Local Intelligence. A Movement Toward Vengeance. The Wickenburg Massacre nearly called forth another terrible retribution on the heads of the murderers, at the hands of our citizens. It is not surprising that the people of Arizona should have become well nigh frenzied by the criminal courtesy shown the Assassin of the Indian Bureau: and the result of this frenzy would, inevitably, have been the justifiable massacre of every Indian on the Date Creek reservation, were it not for the complete confidence which the people have in Gen. Crook, and which, at the eleventh hour, influenced them to let the matter rest in his hands feeling satisfied that he will do justice in the matter, so far as he has the authority to act. No sooner had it been established beyond the possibility of mistake that the murder was perpetrated by Indians and that the Indians were in part, if not wholly, from the Date Creek reservation, than a party of some sixty citizens was organized to take vengeance upon the murderers, and soon declared itself in readiness to move. About this time, a few members of the party- more thoughtful than their comrades— whose course we heartily commend, were instrum ental in staying proceedings for the time, and finally in causing the abandonment of the project, through deference for the presence of Gen. Crook- knowing well that he would leave no means untried to have the matter properly attended to. And here let us add that this is not a case wherein justice can be done by simply killing the actual murderers, provided they should be discovered; there is not one Indian in the whole neighborhood, either on the reservation or elsewhere, who was not aware that the murder was to be perpetrated. These are all responsible- and the sacrifice of the worthless lives of the whole tribe would not compensate for the loss of the least one among the victims.

The Arizona Miner Prescott, Arizona Territory November 18th, 1871 Local Intelligence. Accounts received from Camp Date Creek, about the early part of the week, state during the 4th and 5th inst., a large number of the reservation Indians were absent, and did not return until the 6th. The Wickenburg murder was perpetrated on the 5th, and the murderers were traced to Date C. In view of these facts it is evident that the Apache-Mohaves, at Date Creek reservation, were the guilty ones. The evidence against them is circums tantial, but so clear as to amount almost to proof.

The Arizona Miner Prescott, Arizona Territory October 21st, 1871 Local Intelligence. Change of Tactics: Lieutenant Simpson and Geo. Kimball arrived from Camp Date Creek on Tuesday. From a conversation we had with these gentlemen we infer that the Apache-Mohaves at that post will, hereafter, conduct their raids upon the settlers somewhat after the manner that Cotton Mather chose to capture Wm. Penn and his followers: “To serve ye God, capture them slylye.” But as the ApacheM ohaves have no God to serve they are determined, for their own sake, to do their stealing “slylye” and avoid that Henry—rifle controversy which seems to be the glory of the white man.

The Apache—Mohave Indians are, every one, sneaking murderers and thieves, and yet they are allowed the run of military posts in this vicinity, and have oftent imes been fed out of their commissaries. The Indian that murdered Abraham Henning was an Apache-Mohave son of a gun, who had in his possession a paper from the commander at Camp Date Creek, recommendi ng him as a good Indian. How long, 0, Lord, are soldiers and citizens going to be gulled by this villainous tribe?

The Arizona Miner Prescott, Arizona Territory March 4th, 1871 Local Intelligence. From Camp Date Creek. Geo. H. Kimball post trader at Date Creek, is whiling away the time here, and attending to business. Together, George and ourseif passed away a “pleasant” day and night in Eastern Apache land, and from the knowledge then gained of him, we know him to be a man who “will do to tie to.” Col. O’beirne, commanding Camp Date Creek, came up Thursday last, and we learn, brought news of the burning of Ed F. Bowers hay-stack, in Skull Valley. Have not learned by what means fire was communicated to it.

The Arizona Miner Prescott, Arizona Territory November 19th, 1870 Local Intelligence - Nice Fight. A Party of Pimas Kill 13 Apache—Mohaves . It affords us intense pleasure to be able to state that the party of Pima Indians that left Prescott, a short time ago, succeeded in killing thirteen Apache—Mohaves, and wounding several others . But, we regret to have to state that our Pima friends lost two of their number, and had five others wounded. The particulars of this, to us, pleasant affair, are about as follows: Early Monday morning last, as the Pimas were traveling through Bell 's Canyon, on their way to Camp Date Creek, they discovered fresh Apache tracks going northward, followed them, and soon into which they sailed, with the after struck a rancher ia , foregoing result. It is said they peeled the scalps from the heads of the dead devils, and took them with them. Thanks, brave the treacherous , Pimas , for this victory over our common foe , — bloodthirsty Apache. This makes nearly thirty Apaches the Pimas have killed inside the past two months .

In Skull Valley, last week, a soldier stood talking to a farmer who was chopp— ing wood, when the axe flew from the striking the handler foot of the soldier , severing the great toe and so cutting the foot otherwise that the man will be lame for life. The soldier belonged to Camp Date Creek , and the Surgeon at that point attended to the sufferer.

The Arizona Miner Prescott, Arizona Territory June 25th, 1870 Local Intelligence. We learn by letter from Dr. R. B. Y u ill, of Wickenburg, that Alfred Johnson, one of the men recently killed by Indians , between Kirkland Valley and Camp Date Creek, in this county, came from Truro, Nova Scotia, where his parents now re— side. As yet, we have not learned any— thing regarding the family and former home of Watson, who was murdered at the same time and place.

The Arizona Miner Prescott, Arizona Territory March 26th, 1870 Local Intelligence. From Camp Date Creek Killing of Two Indians . Not long since, Indians stole several head of cattle from a herd in the vicinity of Martinez's Ranch, and it being brought to the notice of the commanding officer at Camp Date Creek, Lieutenant Cluley, with 30 enlisted men and a few citizens, were sent to the mountains, with orders to hunt Johnny Apache, and, if possible , drub him for the offense. The little command was under the guidance of William Rice, who, with one or two others, left it on the evening of the 14th inst. , and started on a scout. Rice and his companions had not proceeded far before they discovered, at the bottom of a deep and torturous canyon, near Sol 's Wash, what was evidently a fire. After satisfying themselves thoroughly upon this point, they returned to the command, reported their lucky discovery to the Lieutenant, who immediately set his men in motion, and, upon arriving as near the place as caution would admit, posted the little force around what he and they supposed to be a rancheria, containing many Indians. The night was a cold one, and the men, in order to keep from freezing, frequently stole softly from their positions in the rocks, retreated back out of hearing of the Indians, and warmed themselves by running and jumping. Daylight soon came, however, and, the men being in with " They did sor word was given to let loose position , alacrity and the greatest of pleasure, but were surprised to learn that there were but two Indians in the "rancher i a. " Short work was made of the two savages, and the command returned to camp.

From Camp Date Creek. — and Willard Rice, post Boyd, U.S.A. , guide arrived at Fort Whipple Tuesday last, from Camp Date Creek. They say the weather, down in their country, has been very pleasant. Col . O ' Beirne, commander of the post, had gone to Camp McDowell , Captain McCleave commands during his absence. No Indians had been seen in the vicinity of the post for a long time past .

The Arizona Miner Prescott, Arizona Territory December 4th, 1869 Local Intelligence . The California and Eastern mail arrived Wednesday afternoon , many hours behind time. The driver of the mail stage said that the delay was caused by mud and water between Wickenburg and La Paz , the valleys of that section having been flooded by heavy rains. The road between this place and Camp Date Creek was also bad. The snow extended west as far as Skull Valley. The driver informed us that one of his mules gave out, but, luckily , a man came along, riding a bronco horse , which the driver pressed into service.
