The Arizona Miner
Prescott, Arizona Territory
September 26th, 1866
General Mason.
We have no apology for General Mason ,
or for any officer,
military or civil, where he fails to do his duty; but as the hue
and cry raised by certain parties since the General left the
Territory may lead those not familiar with the movements, while
here, to believe that he was wholly inactive, we print herewith
a synopsis of his operations, which he furnished the Governor in
December last:
Headquarters District of Arizona,
Prescott, December 3rd, 1865.
Hon. R.C. McCormick ,
Acting Governor of Arizona:
Sir— As requested by you I herewith send a synopsis of military
operations in this District since my assignment to its command.
His Excellency Governor Goodwin and myself left Drum Barracks
May 1st, for this Territory, with company A of 1st California
cavalry as escort; Colonel Lewis ,
with two companies of his
regiment ,
destined for Tubac or its vicinity; and Colonel
Bulware, with two companies of the same regiment, to occupy Fort
Yuma, had preceded us. One company of the 7th had also been sent
to Fort Mohave to relieve the company of the 4th California
infantry. Before leaving Drum Barracks, I ordered one company of
the 7th California infantry to proceed to Prescott as soon as
practicable after its arrival from San Francisco ,
and re—
enforce Fort Whipple. We arrived at Fort Yuma on the 14th, and
on the 15th ordered company E 4th California infantry to proceed
at once to Date Creek, with instructions to the commanding
officer to place himself in communication with the commanding
officer at Fort Whipple ,
and act in concert with him, with
special instructions to scout the roads to Prescott, La Paz, and
Wickenburg, and to give all protection possible to parties
travel ling those roads
John S. Mason
Brigadier General Volunteers ,
Commanding District of Arizona.
