Arizona Citizen Tucson, Pima County, AT. Saturday, August 3rd, 1872 GEN. HOWARD’S REPORT. Tuesday the 6th of May, found us at evening at the Camp Date Creek reservation. Here Lieutenant F.H.E. Ebstein, the agent strongly aided and supported by the post commander, Colonel O’Beirne, having comprehended the real plan of the Government, has succeeded by unremitting effort in keeping the Indians on the reservation during their days of great discontent. Their planting ground here is very limited, their clothing poor, the small children completely naked, and their condition generally gave the impression of want and past suffering. The increase in the rations had made them quite contented. I could not help thinking how little you have done for human beings when you merely give them food. The Indians here are mostly Mojave Apaches. Some Yuma Apaches and others are gathered here. The numbers altogether are eight to nine hundred. They represented their grievences and needs to me in a formal interview, much as at the other places, and after we had left them selected two young men to represent them in the Washington delagation. I was sorry Lieutenant Ebstein had not sent one of the captains, but these delagates seemed to satisfy the Indians, and let them come.
