Hd qrs. Camp Date Creek, A. T. July 31st, 1869 Lt. A. B. Wells, 8th U.S. Cavalry A. A. A.G. Hd ' qrs. Sub Dist. of Prescott Fort Whipple, A. T. Lieutenant : I have the honor to report that during the past month no scout— ing parties have left this Post. On the 17th inst. the Mail Escort consisting of three enlisted men of this Command were attacked about fifteen miles from this Camp, on the road lying between this Post and Prescott. Two of the men were instantly Killed, whilst the other escaped, and the Mail Rider, a citizen, was severely wounded . On the following day, immediately upon receiving news of this 8th Cavalry, with Bvt. Captain R. Lt . O . B . Boyd , outrage , Somerby, 8th Cavalry, and a party of enlisted men started for the scene of disaster and brought the bodies of the murdered men to this Post. All efforts for the recovery of the mail were fruitless Beyond this, no depredations have been reported in the vicinity of this Post, though a rumor has reached Camp that the Indians during the month successfully attacked a train of several wagons en—route from Vulture Mine to Wickenburg . Captain Somerby with all the available men of Troop "B" 8th Cavalry, in company with Lt. McCleave left the Post on the 27th inst. for the Hacguehila Mountains .
