10021. John Whittig - Biographical Notes

JOHN WHITTIG Was born at Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, in about 1836. On November 8th, 1864 at Nevada City, Calif— ornia he enlisted to serve three years , as private in Captain George D. Kendall s Company " I " 7th California Infantry. He was mustered in at the Presidio of San Francisco, November 18th, 1864. Before enlisting in the service he worked as a Miner. He left San Francisco with his Company during May of 1865 for Fort Whipple, A. T. , via Fort Mohave, A. T. and arrived in June, 1865. While serving as a Mail Escort on detached service , along the Fort Whipple, Date Creek Road, he was killed by Indians July 21st, 1865, near Skull Valley, A. T. His remains eventually were relocated to the Camp Date Creek, A-T . Cemetery. During June of 1892 his remains were removed to the San Francisco National Cemetery at the Presidio, and reinterred in Grave Number 1188, West Side.
