The Arizona Miner Prescott, Arizona Territory April 8th, 1871 April 1st, near Camp Date Creek, (where there were two companies of soldiers), this same party of Indians attacked a train of five wagons- four of which belonged to Dr. W.W. Jones, and one to Henry Lachman, killing Mr. Lachman, wounding another man, and driving off every animal in the train. Jones’ wagons were loaded with goods for the military authorities, Lachman’s wagon with goods for Mr. Adams, of this place. If, as stated, Jones’ wagon- master was informed by an Apache-Mohave Indian, before being attacked, that the “Tontos” were laying for him, a great respons ibility rests upon him. The men of the train were very poorly provided with arms and ammunition. The Indians destroyed a good deal of property, but did not burn the wagons, owing to the fact, we presume, that a party of officers and soldiers were coming on, close behind the train. The Apache—Mohave above spoken of, carried news of the terrible affair to Camp Date Creek, and troops were dispatched after the Indians, who for some unexplained reason, returned to the post after they had ret aken some of the mules. We have heard said that, the night of the attack, the Indians and troops rested upon different sides of the same mountain, and that had the troops acted as they should have done, all the mules could have been retaken, and same Indians killed.
